When is a digital watch better than an analogue one?

If a child only wants to know what time it is, a digital display is faster. The stopwatch is handy for training and running races, the alarm for camp, and the backlight in the dark. An analogue watch, however, teaches a better sense of time, so many parents buy an analogue first and switch to digital around third or fourth grade.

Which digital kids' watch should you choose?

  • Tiko Time digital: in pink, black, white and blue versions, the most affordable entry point.
  • Lorus Kids: Seiko's sister brand, with some of the models rated 10 atm, which means swim-proof.
  • Ice Watch Smart: models from the Belgian Ice Watch, the upper end of the range.

What to watch for with button watches

For a smaller child, fewer buttons are better: if they have to struggle with lots of buttons and modes, the alarm is sure to end up set for the wrong time. Show them at home how to get back to the time display. Check the water resistance too: a 3 atm model handles rain, while a 10 atm one can go to the pool as well.

If you get stuck with the settings

The manual that comes with digital watches shows what each button does; it is worth going through it together once. If the watch behaves oddly or the display fades, it usually points to a weakening battery, which our own watch service will replace.

You will find analogue models among the kids' watches.

Questions about digital watches for kids

From what age is a digital watch good for a child?

Even a 5–6-year-old can use a digital watch, because they can read the numbers. To learn the concept of time, though, it is worth using an analogue watch alongside it.

What determines the price of a digital kids' watch?

Mainly the brand and the functions: Tiko Time is the most affordable entry point, while the Lorus Kids and Ice Watch Smart models represent a higher category.

Is there a swim-proof digital kids' watch?

Yes, among digital kids' watches there are also models with 10 atm (100 m) water resistance, which can be used for swimming. The 3 atm versions only handle splashing water.
