Watch Winders – Keeping Automatic Watches Running, for One or Two Watches
In watch winders you will find wooden-cased winders for one watch and models that move two watches in our range, and further types can be ordered in the webshop. You order online and we deliver to your door. If your automatic watch stops even with a winder, our own watch service will check whether there is a problem with the movement.
What is a watch winder for?
A watch winder is a small motorised holder that slowly rotates an automatic watch, so the rotor keeps winding the mainspring and the watch keeps running even when it is not on your wrist. A quartz watch does not need one, and it will not wind a hand-wound watch either.
Who is it worth it for?
- Someone with two or three automatic watches who swaps between them daily.
- Someone with an automatic with a date or calendar who is tired of resetting it every morning.
- Someone with an expensive collection who wants to keep it nicely in one place.
If you only have one automatic watch that you wear almost every day, you probably do not need a winder – the movement of your wrist is enough for it.
What to look for when buying
- Turns per day and direction: on the better winders you can set which way and how many times it turns each day, because not every movement winds in both directions.
- Quiet motor: if it will go in the bedroom, check the product details for how quiet it is, or ask us.
- Capacity: do you need it for one watch or two? If you have more watches, combine it with a watch box from our other products.
If you do not know which rotation direction and daily number of turns your watch movement calls for, send us the model name and we will check for you.
Watch winders – what is worth knowing
Does an automatic watch need a watch winder?
It is not essential; it is only useful if you do not wear the watch for days and do not want to reset it. If you wear it every day, the movement of your wrist winds it.
Can a watch winder harm an automatic watch?
Not with the right settings, because modern automatic movements protect the mainspring from overwinding with a slipping clutch. The key is for the number of turns and the direction to suit the movement.
What determines the price of a watch winder?
The number of places, the material of the case and the quality of the motor. A simple winder for one watch is the entry level, while models that move two watches, with a wooden case and adjustable programmes, belong to the higher price range.
