If you are looking for a men's mechanical watch, you can choose from a wide range, from entry-level Japanese automatics to the Swiss upper tier. The great majority are automatic, but there are hand-wound pieces too. Should you choose an automatic or a hand-wound men's watch?

An automatic winds its spring from the motion of your wrist with the help of a rotor, so with daily wear you don't have to think about it. You wind a hand-wound watch with the crown – many people do it in the morning as a ritual. Because there is no rotor in it, a hand-wound case is often thinner and slides more easily under a cuff.

Which series is worth starting with?

  • Seiko 5 Sports – the most popular, tough entry-level automatic.
  • Orient Star and Citizen Tsuyosa – a notch finer in finish, still at an accessible price.
  • Longines HydroConquest, Mido Ocean Star, TAG Heuer Aquaracer – Swiss dive automatics.
  • TAG Heuer Carrera, Baume & Mercier – the upper tier, for a suit and big occasions.

How accurate is a men's mechanical watch?

A deviation of a few seconds a day is completely normal; it is the nature of a spring-driven movement. If it gains or loses much more than that, get in touch: our own watch service will take a look, and if needed we arrange the regulation through the brand's official service. It is worth having the movement checked every few years. You will find the other movement types on the men's watches by movement page.

If you wear a lot of shirts, also check the case thickness on the product page: automatics under 12 mm and hand-wound models slip comfortably under the cuff, while dive watches are chunkier.

Men's mechanical watches – the most common questions

What should I start with if I'm looking for my first automatic watch?

At the entry level the Seiko 5 Sports, Orient and Citizen automatics are typical: tough, good value for money, and they show well what a mechanical watch is like day to day.

Can I swim with a men's mechanical watch?

Yes, if the watch is at least 10 ATM and its crown is properly pushed in or screwed down. Many men's automatics in the range are at least 20 ATM, and these are suitable for diving too.

What is a hand-wound watch?

A mechanical watch whose spring has to be wound by hand with the crown. It has no rotor, so it is often thinner than an automatic.

How long does an automatic men's watch run if I take it off?

As long as its power reserve lasts: for many models that is a day or two, and for the Tissot Powermatic 80 movement it is 80 hours. After that you simply restart it and set it.
