Seiko Solar watches – light-powered watches with no battery changes

Seiko Solar watches never need a regular battery change: the cell under the dial charges from sunlight and lamp light. The category features 10 bar men's models – including the sporty Macchina Sportiva – and you will find light-powered movements in several Prospex pieces too. We are an official Seiko dealer, with the factory warranty and our own watch service.

How does Seiko Solar work?

A solar cell under the dial collects light and charges a built-in rechargeable battery. It does not need bright sun: office lighting or a desk by the window is enough. Fully charged, the watch keeps running in the dark for a long time, so it is convenient even if you do not wear it every day.

Solar, automatic or quartz – which one?

  • Solar – no battery changes, and it does not stop after a few days of rest.
  • Automatic – mechanical, wound by movement, but it can stop if you leave it off the wrist.
  • Traditional quartz – cheaper, but it needs a new battery every few years.

What to watch out for if you keep it in a drawer

If a solar watch sits in the dark for weeks, it can run flat. Just put it on a windowsill for a day and it starts again. On many models the seconds hand begins to jump when the energy is running low – a sign that it needs light.

Who is Seiko Solar for?

For anyone who wants a maintenance-free, accurate watch: no winding, no trips to change a battery, and the models in this category are 10 bar, so you can swim with them. You will find more light-powered models in the Seiko range, for example in the Prospex series. If you are looking for a specific Solar model that is not in the list, write to us and we will look into it.

Frequently asked questions about solar Seiko watches

Do you need to change the battery in a Seiko Solar?

No. A Seiko Solar charges its rechargeable battery from light, so there is no routine battery change. After many years, the rechargeable battery itself may need replacing.

Is lamp light enough to charge a Seiko Solar?

Yes, artificial light charges a Seiko Solar too, just more slowly than sunlight. With daily wear that is more than enough.

What should I do if my solar watch has stopped?

Leave it in strong light, for example on a windowsill, for a day or two and it will start again. If that does not help, contact us and our own watch service will take a look.

Does a Seiko Solar come with a warranty?

Yes. As an official Seiko dealer we supply every Solar watch with the factory warranty, and our own watch service provides the service backup.
