Citizen Eco-Drive – Light-Powered Watches, No Battery Changes

The Citizen Eco-Drive charges itself from any light, so it needs no battery, and this is our widest Citizen selection: men's and women's models from Elegance to Promaster, from entry level to titanium-cased pieces. We are an official Citizen dealer, we deliver to your door with the manufacturer warranty, and if an Eco-Drive ever stops, our service charges it first before replacing anything.

How does the Citizen Eco-Drive work?

Under the dial sits a solar cell that uses both daylight and lamp light, and the energy is stored in a rechargeable cell. Fully charged, the watch keeps running for a long time even in the dark. The technology goes back to the 1976 Crystron solar watch and is now Citizen's best-known development. In practice: you wear it and forget about it.

Which Eco-Drive series suits you?

  • Citizen Elegance Lady – a slim-cased women's Eco-Drive for the office.
  • Elegance Man – 10 ATM, for every day and with a suit too.
  • Promaster Sky and Marine – pilot and diver watches.
  • Chrono and Titanium – stopwatch versions and lightweight cases.
  • Attesa Satellite – the top of the range, with satellite time setting.

What to do if your Eco-Drive has stopped

It is almost always a flat charge: in a drawer, or under a long shirt sleeve, it does not get enough light. Put it on a windowsill for a day (not in direct sun, and not on a car dashboard) and it will start again. If the seconds hand jumps every two seconds, that signals a low charge, not a fault. If it still will not start, write to our service and we will agree on the next step.

When you buy online, you will find the case size and water resistance on the product page; if you are unsure, ask us and we will tell you how much light that particular model needs.

Citizen Eco-Drive: the most common questions

Do you have to change the battery in a Citizen Eco-Drive?

No, a Citizen Eco-Drive has no battery to replace; light charges it. It is enough to wear it regularly, or to leave it somewhere bright once a week.

How long does an Eco-Drive run in the dark?

Fully charged, an Eco-Drive can run for a long time, even for months without light, and the exact figure differs by model. You will find it on the product page, or just ask us.

Is there a titanium Citizen Eco-Drive?

Yes, several titanium-cased Eco-Drives are available: Titanium men's and women's models, the Zenshin and the Attesa. They are noticeably lighter than steel.

What determines the price of a Citizen Eco-Drive?

The series and the material: Elegance and Sporty models are in the more affordable band, chronographs and titanium-cased models are higher, and Promaster and Attesa are the upper tier.

Can I dive with an Eco-Drive?

With 20 or 30 ATM Eco-Drive models, yes, and you will mainly find these in the Promaster Marine series. 10 ATM models are for swimming.
